It has now been 5 days and we are finally feeling acclimated to our surroundings. We have spent each of our days exploring the city of Antigua and are happy to call this home base for the next couple months.
Grandma Sherry has been such a great host, and has preached to us "that this will not be a trip, but an adventure." She has encouraged us to live in the present and we believe we are getting pretty good at it.
This past Sunday, in honor of our friend, cousin, and grandson Nick Pasquale, we hiked 11 miles to the village of Santa Maria de Jesus. This indigenous village along side a volcano was our first true experience of rural Guatemala. Sunday is market day in Guatemala and everyone was out and about. When we finally made it to our destination, we saw hundreds of people packed into the church and others gathered around outside eating, drinking, and simply having a good time.
Living in San Clemente for our whole lives, we have learned to know and appreciate community. Santa Maria de Jesus will forever hold a special place in our hearts for many reasons, but most importantly because these people acted as one.
Tomorrow we start our first set of 1 on 1 spanish lessons and could not be more thrilled to share with you more in the next few days!
Buen Dia!
